Bilibili Download Not Working? Find Your Fix
Your Bilibili download failed — and “try another site” isn’t a real answer. Every failure has a technical root cause: an audio track that never downloaded, a codec your player can’t decode, a link the parser can’t read, a network hiccup, or — just as importantly — a video that simply isn’t downloadable. Pick your symptom and you’ll get either a working fix or an honest explanation. No guesswork, no dead ends.
Start Here: Pick Your Symptom
- The download has no sound — video plays, but it’s silent
- Only low quality is available — no HD or 4K option shows up
- The link isn’t recognized — the tool says the link is invalid
- The downloaded file won’t play — your player refuses to open it
- The download fails midway — it starts, then stalls or errors out
- None of the above applies — the video may be behind a limit you can’t bypass
- You saw a specific error message — look it up in the error database
The Download Has No Sound
Bilibili serves video and audio as separate streams — if the audio track wasn’t fetched or merged, your file plays silently. It’s a merging problem, not a broken file.
Fix it
- Re-run the download on SaveBili and choose an option that merges audio automatically (MP4 presets do this).
- Check file size first — a video-only file is much smaller than the merged version.
- Sound in one player but not another? That’s a codec issue — see the “won’t play” section.

Only Low Quality Is Available
Your ceiling is set by three things: what the uploader published, what your source can stream, and what your session is entitled to. Some videos were never uploaded in 1080p or 4K — the low-res version is all that exists.
Fix it
- Check the original video on Bilibili first: if the player itself tops out at 480p, no tool can conjure a higher-quality stream.
- Make sure you’re pasting the link to the correct episode or part — multi-part uploads sometimes carry different quality ceilings per episode.
- Higher qualities can be restricted to logged-in or premium sessions; downloads through a downloader tool can only reach what a regular visitor session can reach.

The Link Isn’t Recognized
“Link invalid” almost always means the pasted URL isn’t a video page URL — a share link with extra parameters, a mobile-app link, a channel/playlist page, or a URL copied from a thumbnail instead of the address bar.
Fix it
- Open the video in your browser, copy the full URL from the address bar, and try again.
- Strip tracking parameters (the
?and everything after it) and retry. - Use the Bilibili Link Inspector to validate the link and extract the correct video URL automatically.

The Downloaded File Won’t Play
If the file downloads fully but your player shows a black screen or an error, it’s a codec issue — the data is fine, but the player can’t decode it. Bilibili streams increasingly use modern codecs (like HEVC/H.265) that older players can’t handle.
Fix it
- Play the file in VLC (free, on every platform) — it ships with its own codecs and plays virtually any Bilibili download.
- Check the file extension: if it says
.tmp,.part, or.crdownload, the download didn’t finish — the file isn’t corrupt, it’s incomplete. Re-download. - Try an MP4 container download instead of WebM — MP4 has the widest player support.

The Download Fails Midway
Downloads that start and then stall or die are network problems, not tool problems. Bilibili’s media servers sit in China, and long cross-border connections can drop or reset — especially on large HD files. Download links are also time-limited: a stalled download sits on an expired URL.
Fix it
- Check your connection: run a speed test, switch from Wi-Fi to a wired connection or a stronger signal, and pause other downloads.
- Retry the download from scratch — expired links are refreshed when you re-paste the video URL and generate a new download.
- For large files, download during off-peak hours when your connection is less congested.
- Free up disk space and disable any download-manager extensions that interfere with browser downloads.
Honest Limits: Videos That Aren’t Downloadable
Some failures aren’t bugs — they’re boundaries no downloader tool can or should cross. If your video falls into one of these categories, no tool will fix it, and anyone promising otherwise is not being straight with you.
- Members-only (premium) content — videos behind Bilibili’s membership paywall are only streamable by logged-in members. Download tools cannot defeat authentication or paywalls, and we won’t try.
- Region-locked content — some videos are licensed for viewing only in specific regions. Using VPNs or proxies to evade geo-restrictions violates Bilibili’s terms; we don’t recommend it and won’t support it.
- Deleted or private videos — if the video is removed, set to private, or the uploader deleted their account, the source streams no longer exist. There’s nothing left to download.
- Live streams — live broadcasts aren’t files yet; they only become downloadable after the uploader publishes them as a replay, and only if that replay is public.
For everything you can download, keep it to content you own, created, or have permission to save — your own uploads, Creative Commons videos, or videos whose creators allow downloading. More questions? See the SaveBili Downloader FAQ.
Error-Message Database
Look up the exact message or code you saw:
| Message / code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 403 Forbidden | The media server refused the request — usually an expired session token or hotlink protection. | Re-paste the video URL and generate a fresh download link. |
| 404 / “Video not found” | The video is deleted, set to private, or the link points to a page that no longer exists. | Open the original link in your browser. If the video page is gone or private, it can’t be downloaded. |
| 412 / “Precondition failed” | The download request was sent with outdated or mismatched parameters — typically a stale cached link. | Clear the tool page and start over with a freshly copied link. |
| “Link expired” / “Invalid link” | Bilibili download URLs are time-limited; this one ran out, or the URL wasn’t a video page. | Copy the URL fresh from the address bar — see the link guide or Link Inspector. |
| “Network error” / download stalls at a percentage | The connection to the media server dropped — network instability or throttling. | Check your connection, retry from scratch, and avoid resuming expired sessions. |
| File downloads as 0 KB or HTML | You saved an error page, not the media — the parser was blocked or the stream unavailable. | Verify the video is public and playable, then generate a new link. |
| “Codec not supported” / black screen in player | The file is fine; your player can’t decode the video or audio codec. | Play it in VLC, or re-download in an MP4 container — see the format guide. |
FAQ
Why did my Bilibili download fail with no message?
Usually browser-related: a download-manager extension intercepting the file, a popup blocker killing the save dialog, or a full disk. Disable download extensions, check disk space, and retry in a plain browser window.
Why does the video download but the audio is missing?
Bilibili serves video and audio as separate streams — if the audio stream wasn’t fetched or merged, the video plays silently. Re-download with an MP4 preset that merges audio automatically. Full diagnosis in our no-sound guide.
Why can’t I download in 1080p or 4K?
Either the uploader never published that quality, or it’s restricted to sessions your downloader can’t access. The quality the video player itself offers is the ceiling any downloader can reach. More in the quality guide.
What does “403 Forbidden” mean on a Bilibili download?
The media server refused the request — most often an expired download link or hotlink protection. Generate a fresh download link by re-pasting the video URL; don’t retry an old, expired session.
The tool says my link is invalid, but it works in my browser. Why?
The URL is probably a share, mobile-app, or playlist link rather than the video page URL. Copy the full URL from your browser’s address bar on the video page itself, or run it through the Bilibili Link Inspector.
Can I download members-only Bilibili videos?
No. Members-only content sits behind Bilibili’s authentication and paywall, and downloader tools can’t — and shouldn’t — bypass that. SaveBili only handles publicly accessible videos.
Can I download a Bilibili video that’s region-blocked in my country?
No, and we don’t recommend workarounds. Region locks are licensing restrictions, and using VPNs or proxies to evade them violates Bilibili’s terms of service. SaveBili doesn’t support geo-restriction evasion.
The video was deleted but I have the link — can I still download it?
No. Once a video is deleted or set to private, the source streams no longer exist and there is nothing to download. A saved link can’t recreate the file.
Why does my downloaded file play with no picture but has sound?
Your player can decode the audio codec but not the video codec (often HEVC on newer Bilibili streams). Play the file in VLC, or see the format guide for codec details.
Is it safe to use a “Bilibili unlocker” or downloader that asks for my login?
No. Never enter your Bilibili credentials into a third-party downloader — that’s a phishing risk, and any service asking for them promises things that violate the platform’s terms. Legitimate downloaders use public video links only.
My download keeps failing halfway. Is my file broken?
The file isn’t broken — the connection dropped, which is common with large files. Check your connection, start a fresh download from a newly generated link, and avoid resuming expired sessions.
Which video should I download — the biggest file or the MP4?
Choose MP4 for maximum compatibility — it plays on virtually every device and player. See the format guide for the trade-offs.
