Why Your Downloaded Bilibili Video Has No Sound
Your downloaded Bilibili video plays perfectly — motion, picture, subtitles — but there’s no sound. The file isn’t broken, and your speakers are fine. What’s almost certainly happened is that the download grabbed only the video half of a stream Bilibili delivers in two separate halves. Below: the 10-second answer, why it happens, how to confirm it, and the fix.
The 10-second answer
Bilibili serves most HD video as DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming): one stream carries video only, another carries audio only. If your downloader saved just the video stream, you get a silent file. The fix is simple: re-download choosing a merged / “with sound” option — SaveBili merges the audio and video streams automatically, so this never happens.
Why it happens: DASH split streams
When you watch a video on Bilibili’s site or app, your player is quietly juggling two downloads at once. DASH splits every video into two parallel streams of small segments:
- Video-only segments (files ending in
.m4s) — the picture, no sound. - Audio-only segments (also
.m4s) — the soundtrack, no picture.
Your browser’s player plays them back together, so you never notice. But a downloader that only fetches the video segments hands you a perfectly valid video file with an empty soundtrack. This is also why “no sound” complaints almost always involve HD qualities (720p and up) — lower-quality progressive MP4s are a single combined file, so they can’t go silent this way.
How to check if your file is video-only
Before re-downloading, you can confirm the diagnosis in under a minute:
- VLC media player (free, every platform): open the file, go to Tools → Codec Information. Look at the stream list — a healthy file shows two streams (Stream 0: video, Stream 1: audio). If only one video stream is listed, your file genuinely has no audio track.
- File size sanity check: a 5-minute 1080p video with sound is typically well over 100 MB. If your “1080p” file is suspiciously small, the audio stream is likely missing.
- Phone gallery / Files app: play the file with the volume up. If the timeline moves but the speaker stays silent across two different player apps, it’s the file — not your device.
If VLC shows one stream only, you’ve confirmed it: the download was video-only.
The fix: re-download with merged audio
There are two ways to get a file with sound:
- Use a downloader that merges automatically. SaveBili fetches both the video and audio DASH streams and merges (muxes) them into a single MP4 before handing it to you. Paste your Bilibili link (or BV number, or b23.tv short link), pick your quality, and the downloaded file has sound — no extra step.
- If your current tool offers it, look for an option labeled “with sound”, “merged”, or “MP4 (audio+video)” rather than a raw “video only” / “.m4s” option, and re-download.
A note on claims you’ll see elsewhere: some sites advertise “lossless audio” or “320kbps” downloads from Bilibili. Treat those with skepticism — Bilibili’s audio streams are compressed formats served at the platform’s own bitrates; no web tool can conjure quality the source never had. If a tool promises dramatically better audio than the original upload, it’s marketing, not engineering.
When silence is real: the source truly has no audio
Occasionally, the silent file is telling the truth. Some Bilibili uploads genuinely contain no audio track — timelapses, silent gameplay captures, image slideshows, or videos where the uploader stripped the soundtrack. Two clues:
- The video plays silently on Bilibili itself (in the app or on the website). If Bilibili’s own player is silent, no downloader can add sound that was never there.
- VLC’s codec panel on a re-downloaded merged file still shows one stream. That means the source upload has no audio track to merge.
In that case, no re-download will help — the silence is part of the video.
Symptom → cause → fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Video plays, no sound; VLC shows 1 stream | Video-only DASH download | Re-download with a merged option (SaveBili merges automatically) |
| No sound, and silent on Bilibili’s own player too | Source has no audio track | Nothing to fix — the upload is silent by design |
| Sound works on phone but not on PC | Codec your PC player can’t decode (e.g. newer audio formats) | Open in VLC, or see our format guide |
| Audio and video out of sync | Player issue, not a missing stream | Try VLC; re-download the merged file |
| “Download failed” before any file appears | Deleted/private/region-restricted video, or a link the tool can’t parse | Check the video still plays on Bilibili; paste a full link or BV number |

Frequently asked questions
Why does my downloaded Bilibili video have no sound?
Because Bilibili delivers HD video as DASH — separate video-only and audio-only streams. Your download grabbed only the video stream. Re-download with a merged (“with sound”) option.
Is my file broken?
No. A video-only file is a perfectly valid video; it’s just missing its soundtrack. Check in VLC under Tools → Codec Information: one stream means video-only, two streams means it should have sound.
Which download option includes audio?
Look for options labeled “merged”, “with sound”, or plain “MP4” rather than “video only” or “.m4s”. SaveBili always merges audio and video automatically, so there’s no wrong option to pick.
Does SaveBili merge audio automatically?
Yes. SaveBili fetches both DASH streams and muxes them into a single MP4 with sound before you download it.
Why do only my HD downloads go silent, never 360p?
Low-quality progressive MP4s are a single combined file, so they can’t split. The DASH split (and therefore the silent-file problem) only applies to higher qualities served as separate streams.
Can I add sound to a silent file I already downloaded?
Not from the file itself — the audio data was never downloaded. You’d need to fetch the audio stream and mux it in, which for most people is more effort than simply re-downloading the merged file.
The video is silent even on Bilibili’s website. Can any tool fix that?
No. If Bilibili’s own player is silent, the source upload has no audio track. No downloader can add sound that doesn’t exist.
Will re-downloading use a lot of data?
A merged file is larger than the video-only half (it now includes the soundtrack). On mobile data, check the file size shown before you start — SaveBili displays per-quality sizes.
